MoIP Cease-the-Sale Initiative - Round 2
Round 2 survey (individual/business input)
Invasive plants threaten aspects of Missouri’s economy, including horticulture, agricultural production, private landowners, native plant health, native ecosystems, and the outdoor recreation industry. Many of these problematic plants are imported, bred, distributed, and/or promoted for sale in Missouri. To prevent any more invasive plant challenges on the landscape, the Missouri Invasive Plant Council (MoIP) has put forth the idea of ceasing the sale of some invasive plants in the form of state legislature that would ban their sale, propagation, and intentional distribution. This legislation would be separate from the Missouri Noxious Weed Law, and would pertain only to the sale, propagation, and intentional distribution of the plant species listed in the legislation, and not regulate the presence of the listed plants on the landscape. Unless otherwise noted, species listed below include all varieties and cultivars. We have also been working toward partnership with national organizations that may be able to certify 'invasive-free' cultivars of selected species at some point in the future.
A full rationale for why MoIP is pursuing the Cease the Sale effort can be found on the MoIP website.
In late 2020, the Missouri Invasive Plant Council (MoIP) invited more than 90 agriculture, horticulture, and conservation stakeholder groups to provide their level of support for ceasing the sale, propagation, and intentional distribution of each of the 142 species on the MoIP Ranked Assessment of invasive plants.
MoIP is now requesting input from individuals and businesses on a subset of the species on the ranked assessment, which were selected based on the organization-level responses in the Round 1 survey. The subsets are:
